I've lost my sound! Someone please help!
Hi. I’m new to this website, so “hello all” and I have a problem with my PC.
I had to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP Home Edition SP2 the other day and since then I have had problems with VGA, and more importantly sound. I have since sort of managed to sort out the VGA problem by downloading a file from my motherboard’s website, but the sound does NOT want to work at all - it doesn’t even play system sounds! From the information I’ve managed to get from Everest about my system information, I’ve tried no end of various file downloads to try to get my sound to work, but to no avail. I would be grateful for any help in this matter - I’m lost without my music! Here is some more technical-specific information about my PC if it helps : Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-8SIML NF (Rev 2.0) Mobo chipset - SiS651 BIOS type - AMI (01/31/04) CPU type - Intel Celeron, 2700 Mhz (27 x 100) Display: Video Adapter - SiS 650_651_M650_M652_740 (64 MB) 3D Accelerator - SiS 315 Integrated Monitor - NEC FT500 [15" LCD] (100086383001) Multimedia: Audio Adapter - Modem #0 Line Playback Jordan (jordan.kingsford@ntlworld.com) |

Thanks for that Koala. I downloaded and run the above file and, after encountering an error message from Windows warning me that the driver had 'not passed Windows' Logo Testing to verify compatibility with XP' I continued anyway - but it didn't work. I tried to play a sample MP3 through Media Player and another error message popped up, saying :
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly". I'm confused, because the sound was working well enough before I had to reinstall XP. oO(I had a vague recollection of C-Media AC-97 being on my system before the fatal crash, and I've tried that too, but that hasn't worked either.)Oo Last edited by jordankingsford; 07-11-2006 at 06:51 PM. OK - I have an update for you. I re-enabled the audio device in BIOS setup and XP loaded normally and detected new hardware - Realtek AC 97 and Multimedia Audio Controller. So I naturally followed the Add Hardware wizard and everything seemed to be going along smoothly - then it hit.
Another warning about not passing Windows logo testing, but I thought I'd continue anyway - didn't hurt last time. It continued a bit further, then the whole system rebooted, going straight to the Safe Mode option list. I decided to try to start Windows normally, but each time it keeps rebooting itself without loading Windows. I've now disabled the audio device in BIOS and Windows loads fine now - but I'm still without sound, obviously. |

The driver in my link is for the GA-8SIML (rev4.0), the closest I could find for your motherboard.
After another search, I found this page of drivers for the GA-8SIML (rev2.0) http://www.giga-byte.com/Support/Mot...tName=GA-8SIML There is also a link to the motherboard manual http://www.giga-byte.com/Support/Mot...tName=GA-8SIML

Thanks, but I've managed to get it sorted - I amaze myself sometimes! I reinstalled Windows, re-enabled the sound card in BIOS (as it was causing no end of troubles beforehand) but THEN I went to the Packard Bell website and input my model serial number (which I'd found by accident when I rearranged the room!) and downloaded the necessary VGA and sound device drivers.
At least tonight I can have a relatively early, worry-free night! |
