Headset problems

Hello, I believe this is the appropriate forums to post under.

When using software that require a microphone (ventrilo, for example), I use a headset to speak. However, everyone present in the channel I'm in at the time get 'feedback', as in whatever I say, or whatever sound input is occuring, echoes back to everyone's speakers.

A friend told me that it is most likely that my sound card has an on-board mic, now, I'm using an AC97 on-board sound card, and after searching other various forums, it appears that this could very well be the cause of the problem.

Basically, If the AC97 sound card has a mic, I want to know how to disable this without disabling my sound device, so that I'm still able to receive audio, and use my headset to speak. I'm using a logitech headset by the way, if that makes any difference. I have also tried multiple AC97 drivers, with no success.

Thanks in advance,

Greg.

Welcome to TSF!

Can you tell us a bit more about your PC? I can't think of any computers that have AC'97 with on-board mics. Most only have a mic port.

I'm not very good when it comes to this kind of stuff, I'm not sure what specs about my pc would be relevant? If you could tell me what would help you work the problem out, then I'll do what I can :)

Laptops like mine often have onboard mics, but I have never heard of a desktop motherboard with onboard sound having an onboard mic.

After running tests, it appears that my computer is not recognizing my mic at all. Tests result in showing that my mic is turned off, could it be something simple I am not enabling?

Go into the Volume Control. Go to Options > Properties. Put a check next to Microphone. It will now appear in the volume control window with everything else. Make sure its not muted and its turned up to a decent volume.
