want to turn off sound card
I was wanting to shut off the sound card, since I do not have speakers attached to computer. wanting to speed up a sluggish system...

If the sound card is integrated into the motherboard you can disable it in bios. If it is an add-in card you can open the case and remove it. You can also go to the device manager within the control panel and disable the card from there. However if you play games some may not run without audio hardware acceleration, even though you don't have speakers hooked up. I would start my disabling the drivers and if that goes smooth you can remove the card or disable in bios.
