Music Skipping Terribly

G'Day everyone. I was hoping somebody might be able to assist me with this problem i have which may be have something to do with my sound card. I can play music fine when the pc boots up, but after an hour or so, my music skips terribly. I have a fairly up to date pc, and have never had problems with it before. I have the latest drivers. Now that i think of it, this problem occured when i upgraded my XP to Service Pack 2 (with the auto updates blah blah). If anyone could help me, it would be GREATLY appreciated, as this problem is unbearable.

Thanks In Advance!!!!

My System

It sounds like your system might be getting too hot. Download a program like speedfan or everest and monitor your temps. Compare them when the system is first turned on to when the sound starts skipping. What kind of airflow do you have in your case? A minimum of 1 fan for exhaust on the back of the case and 2 fans intake (1 side 1 front) is recommended. You also may want to get a can of compressed air and blow the dust out of the cpu heatsink and fan grills. Just be sure to unplug the cpu fan from the motherboard before blowing it out, the fan movement generates energy which can damage your motherboard. And most important do not forget to plug the cpu fan back in!

Re: Music Skipping Terribly

hello,
my music skips too on my pc.
the really strange thing is i have brand new everything and it skips on the new stuff and it did on the old. i have tried different speakers on the old pc to see a change and no result.
now i have new cables on a new pc connected to home theater speakers. this pc had a great soundcard and should not be skipping like it is. all sound files seem to do this. i am stumped.

Re: Music Skipping Terribly

Nearly everything in your system should not be running even close to that hot. I'm not an expert, but I believe most CPU's safe running temps top out around 65 at the very most and gpu's around 85, bear in mind those are very high temps. 100 is way too high for most components.

room temperature is higher than 65
what temperature do you think the cpu reaches when the pc is off?
its not a fridge when you turn it off so the cpu will eventually reach a
"very high temp" of 78 degrees....
that beside the point anyway,
i need help with music skipping and
my pc has five fans
my problem is ive had two computers in the last year
both had the same problem with skipping
audio files every ten seconds or so i
will hear a slight skip in the music played
and it really throws off the sound
My question is why? why on two different
pc's? I ve tried different speakers from
desktop standard size speakers to home theater
and even headphones to rule that out
since ive used two different pc's and had same problem wouldnt
that rule out the p.c. as a problem?
could power supply from outlet be the problem?

Re: Music Skipping Terribly

is there any way you could find out the manufacturer of the sound card? or if it is onboard sound, the motherboard model? Windows XP, despite being stable and widely compatible with most hardware, still has some compatability issues with certain chipsets in sound cards, especially onboard sound.

another thing you may try, and i may sound insane on this one, is to move any halogen or high intensity lamps away from your PC, Halogen bulbs actually emit an electrical frequency that can introduce interference to sound cards and audio hardware, such as popping/crackling or buzzing.
