5.1 Speakers Causing System Slowdown/Restart

Hey :) I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes...

I recently got the "Rock-5126 Live Hi-Fi 5.1 Audio Speaker System". I connected it to my computer, which has onboard sound from a Asus A7V8X-X motherboard.

Because this motherboard only has 3 jacks for audio, I followed the motherboard manual's instructions: Line in-Bass/Center, Line out-Front Speakers [connected at the front panel], Mic-Rear Speakers. The soundcard is a SoundMax integrated one.

I have Windows XP SP2. When I switch on the speakers, the system has frozen, the monitor displayed a "connection lost" error, and on restart, the system has slowed down dramatically. For example, when I scroll down this page, you can see the page refreshing; when I click on favourites it takes a while for it all to load. Everything works... just slowly.

When I disconnect the 5.1, set the Soundmax/XP Audio setup back to stereo headphones, and restart... the system is still slow. It doesn't recover speed until I've had the computer switched off for a period.

I have no clue what's causing all this. How can the speakers cause a slowdown? I'm new to 5.1 speakers, but this is truly odd.

Thanks for your time :)

Hmm, this is odd. It sounds like interference from the speakers that would cause the monitor to loose the signal. But why that would make the computer slow is beyond me. Do the speakers connect to the computer in any way other than through the line out/mic/line in? Like through the USB port to get power?

Nope! The power is from the mains. I really have no idea what could cause this either... I wonder if getting a PCI sound card would help? At least then I wouldn't have to keep unplugging my speakers to use my TV Card.

Hmm... Could this be a video card issue? I've had a few problems with my video card, signal loss and the infite loop problem. I fixed it by taking the card out, cleaning it and the AGP socket and reseating it.

I'll have to give that a try, but I can't work out why the problem sorts itself out if I have my comp turned off for a while.

While going through Google, I found this:

http://www.driverheaven.net/archive/...hp/t-8850.html

Interesting. Misterwiggles18, do you have an application running which came with your soundcard drivers/utilities? I have SoundMax control panel installed. I'm going to try and uninstall this and see if changing the configurations effects speed.

Try and do the same, if that's the case, and get back to us with your results...

Try plugging in a set of 2 channel speakers to the front and then another set to the rear channels. To see if its a problem with the speakers.

Ok, I took out, cleaned and reseated the video card. Everything's fast again now, but I haven't connected the 5.1 speakers yet. Will let you know how that goes.

I can't find an edit button, so I apologise for double posting.

My problem was fixed by taking the video card out, cleaning, and putting it back in.

I have no idea why... The cleaning step may be unnecessary.

Just thought I'd post for future reference :) I've installed the SoundMax CP again, and apart from annoyingly having to restart when I change configuration, everything is fine.
