Having a bit of a problem here

Ok so I went out today and bought a Microphone Headset. For some reason when I connect it nothing comes through the headset and nothing happens when I talk into the mic. But when I have smart 5.1 ticked and the mic muted I can talk through the ear piece...not the mic.... ( crazy i know) and here myself through the speakers. Is there something I am doing wrong here. I know it can't be this hard to use a microphone headset. Is there something that I could I have or have not ticked that I should look at?? Please help this is driving me crazy...Thanks

When you plug in a headset there is usually two plugs, one that is pink and one that is black. Are you are that you plugged the pink plug in and not the black one?

Well I have both of the plugs plugged in and in the right spots. I am sure that I must have something set wrong. It was working a few months ago and I haven't used it since until a few days ago and that is when I encountered the problem. I remember reading somewhere, I think, that I should not have the smart 5.1 ticked. But for some reason now that is the only way I can get things to sound right coming out of the speakers. I also have to have the mic muted with smart 5.1 ticked to have it work right. Any other info anyone can provide??

Try only plugging the microfone plug in and see if you can hear yourself.
