Confused Various sound problems

please don't give me really obvious solutions to this because I know what I'm doing and I've probably already tried them, such as checking for recent hardware and software changes, or updating drivers.

basically the problems are as follow

1. the volume icon in the taskbar will not show up even if I set it to.
2. I can't hear sound any programs except those meant for playing media files like itunes, wmp, quicktime, etc.
3. the volume keys on my multimedia keyboard have malfunctioned. mute does absolutely nothing (and the green text showing what the media button i pressed does doesn't even show up), volume up sets the volume back down to zero (but technically not mute) and volume down shows the green text but actually does nothing at all.

I have an HP media centre PC and have talked to HP extensively about this. for the sound issues they couldn't find a solution and for the keyboard they said I might have to replace it. can anyone think of anything I can try to fix the first two problems at least? and if possible also the third.

if it helps, I have realtek HD audio manager and "Intel ® High Definition Audio with up to 7.1 surround sound capabilities." I am only uses a twin speaker system. The problem has been troubling me for a few weeks now and none of the many things I've tried have solved any of the three things.

any ideas anyone?

Hi, and welcome to TSF!
This is odd, it sounds like the drivers are not installed, but its still playing through the media players. Try uninstalling the drivers in device manager, and reinstalling the from the HP CD that came with your computer. While you are in the device manager, do you see any yellow !'s next to any of the sound devices?

I have checked task manager multiple times and windows doesn't detect any driver problems with any of the devices. secondly, there is no HP CD because it uses the new HP recovery console on a different partition of the main hard drive to restore things to factory setup. lastly, I have tried uninstalling the driver and then rebooting but it has not solved the problem.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver manually (not from windows). You should be able to find it on the manufacturers website.
