Help with floppy drive!

Ok, so I just got a 5 1/4 floppy drive. When the computer is on though, the drive makes a humming noise. Why? Do I have it hooked up incorrectly?

Could be age. Anyhow, I just got the thing off of ebay, and I don't have disks to test it out with yet (I will be getting them on the weekend.) So is it normal for the drive itself to spin without a disk in it?

You may need to clean it with some air and exemine the slot to see if anything is in there. Do you have softwares requiring a 5 1/4 drive ?

Yes actually, some games that I want to play. See the machine that the drive is in is my DOS gaming machine. It has been years since I have actually used one of these drives, and I didn't remember it actually spinning and humming when it is idle. I couldn't remember if this was normal or not.

Ok, I have tried every which way... I tried different floppy cables, and I even tried putting disks in it, but the drive still spins when there is nothing in it. It does not read the disks I put in either. :(

Scratch that, it does read disks, I had to configure it in the bios. So the drive does work. What I need confirmed though is this and then I am done:

IS IT NORMAL FOR THE CIRCLE PLATE ON THE BOTTOM TO SPIN WHEN THERE IS NOTHING IN THE DRIVE?
