Not clear on drivers for CD-RWs

I occassionally have to wipe out systems and reinstall the operating system from scratch, but when I come across CD Burners I'm not quite sure how those are handled because you can't simply look up the drivers for that system on the manufacturers website normally like you can with NiCs and video cards and so forth. So, what's the best way to handle that? Can you simply install a third party burning program like nero for pretty much any situation, or do you need some drivers specific to that burner? Right now I've got an HP PC I need to wipe out, but I want to make sure I've got this covered before I do.

Thanx

The basic CD drivers are included in the operating system.
You will however need aftermarket software, such as nero
to get the full burning function.
Windows XP does include basic burning capability.

Is nero the best way to go or is there something else that's more universally used? I'm assuming nero is free. I don't want to use anything that requires any kind of purchase or signing up for anything or something that will require any kind of intervention by the user such as having to visit certain sponsers to keep it free or anything like that.
