cd and dvd drives, colors only show 2 and 16
Greetings, I am having an issue with a couple things on my system. i'll start with the cd/dvd issue first. I have win 98SE on that system. About a month ago, I lost both E ( dvd burner ), F ( another cd burner ). just out of the blue they were gone. I got them back. Then last week it happened again. I could not get them back same way I did before, did windows update and they came back. Not even 10 minutes later they were gone again. Checked for conflict, no conflicts but second IDE FIFO has exclamation beside it, so does the cd/dvd. Error message says drivers may not be installed ( code 10 ). Then it says to update them, tried it. Says driver is best driver found for it. Then it says that there is no device present. Keeps going back and forth with that. So, tonight I did system restore. Nothing. Now new issue came up. I only have 2 colors. I checked cables to make sure they weren't loose, cleaned ends with air, blah blah..tried system restore again and still both issues stand. the drives open, lights come on. When I did system restore, I can't get on the net with it because I can't load drivers off of the cd for ethernet card. Well, my new pc, a xp does not have a floppy drive. Wouldnt you just know it...geeeee....ready to tear my hair out. Do you think it's the controller going bad on my board? If that is the case, am I going to have to replace the whole board? Is there a test I can run to see if that is the issue? I tried the Compaq diagnostic but of course...it can't test the drive if its not reading it...any ideas? I'm all ears. i did read the post by tech guy for the microsoft link but it only applies to XP. Thanks a ton in advance for any help...Sincerely, Enigma.

Hello Dai
Sorry took so long to get back to this. Well, I figured out what the issue was. It was the cd drive. Drive F. It went bad. I have it disabled for now
( till I get new one ) I still have drive E, cd/dvd burner. I got that one back. Ok, now Second issue. Since I did sys restore and lost my colors except ofr 2 and 16 colors, I assume that I need drivers for this chipset. This should restore the colors, correct? My model is Compaq 7940. I went to HP site. It gives me two things to download. I downloaded them onto my xp machine to burn to a disk for the 98 machine. Only thing is, I am not sure I am on the right track here with these drivers. Here is what I downloaded ( have not installed anything yet ). Release Date: 2000-05-16 Version: 4.12.01.8.20.16 Contains the video driver for the Diamond Stealth III/Savage 4 Video Controller used in the Specific Compaq Presario PC's listed below. Important Note: A ROM Update to the video firmware is required before this driver can be applied. Please download SP14724 prior to installing this SoftPaq. Then it said that I need to download this first: Release Date: 2000-06-16 Version: 1.41 ROMPaqs are not OS specific, but your factory warranty covers technical support for the originally installed OS only. Please refer to the text to insure that your model is listed. Installing this on a system that it is not designed for may render your computer useless. Fixes Fixes lockup problem that was caused by noise on the AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) bus. Is this what I need to install or am I totally in the wrong place on the HP site? Thanks for any response and your time in this. It is GREATLY appreciated. I miss my 98 machine :-( Sincerely, Enigma. |

Hello Dai,
Well, I don't know what the issue is now...but I had downloaded those drivers from HP site and put them to a disk etc. I tried to run them on my 98, the drive is working. However, it is giving me error message that it's not a valid win 32 application. I had also tried to install winrar the other day on it, was going to try to split a driver file and rejoin it on the 98. I know the app is ok on the disk, I have used it a gazillion times, ( the winrar app. ) I even tried to run the files from the disk itself and also tried to copy them to the desktop on the 98 machine. Am I doing something wrong here that I don't know about??? This is just sooo frustrating. Is it because I am burning it from my xp machine?? Thanks for any help. ( I'll get this if it takes me to my last day...lol...it's become personal with that machine! ) Sincerely, Enigma. |

Hello Dai,
Hi Dai,
I went to the link you posted to me, it lost me. Here is what it said. gege 2005-10-10, 11:06 pm I found a solution for it. all i did was removed the hp software from the computer, went to hp website and download the basic driver which includes scanning. It all works fine now. Adnan I had already downloaded the drivers but can't get them onto the 98 machine because there is the problem of that error message saying it is not valid win 32 application. I looked at my post before you replied ( I was really tired when I wrote it, I think I confused you and I am very sorry ). Here is what I tried to do. I downloaded those drivers for the chipset onto the win xp machine so I could burn them to a disk ( CD ) and put them onto the 98 machine that is having the issues. I got it in the drive, clicked on my computer icon, all went well at first when I tried to copy them over to the desktop, I clicked onto the file and it said this is not a valid win 32 application. This also happened when I tried to do that the other day. I tried to install winrar. I went to winrar site long ago and had copied the program to disk for future reference. I used that disk many times since then after I've had to do restores and such and it has always worked on the 98 machine. I never got an error that it was not valid win32 application. I did this time though. So, I went to winrar site again and re downloaded it to my xp machine and burned a new copy off and tried to put that on the 98 and same message. I can't download anything from the net on the 98 machine since I can't get drivers off of disk for my ethernet card. I tried to search for the whole thread in the link you sent me and it says page can't be displayed. I tried going to the w .mcse.ms site and looked for the whole thread and can't find it there either. I looked in the windows 98 forum. I just tried it again and it gave me message that braindumps admin has left for the day and will be back at 8am in the morning....LOL. Hope that clarifies some things up a bit...thanks again Dai...
