DATA burns, but music and movies wont.

I have had the change to take a look at a Compaq r4000 series notebook.

The problem with the drive is it errors out whenever burning Music CD's or Movie DVD's.

I can burn DATA DVD's with out a problem, but when I try to create a DVD Movie on a DVD, Roxio errors out and just freezes. At times I get an error saying I need a SCSI device to create DVDs...Im assuming this means that the drive is not recognized. The movies are either Divx or avi files, home videos and other content.

When creating music cd's, the error simply states that the cd cannot be completed. I have tried with Roxio, Nero as well as with the built in windows burning engine and with Media Player 10. Music CDs wont burn. I have tried different media as well, but same issue.

Any one run into anything similar?? XP SP2 Home is installed on the notebook along with EZ Media Creator, Alchohol, & Clone CD.

Have you checked for firmware upgrades? Compaq is proprietary sometimes it will screw other programs so you have to use it's software I would uninstall anything that came with the computer first then try again with nero and check for firmware upgrades. I have had some issues with alcohol 120 and other programs looking for this program to disable it. just some thoughts....

i have uninstalled alcohol, roxio and any other program related to burning excpet for clone cd, as I have never had any problems with clone cd with any other os or pc.

I installed Nero 6...and it burns the cd successfuly..but..after the cd ejects and i pop it back in..theres nothing on it.

It shows that the cd is blank with nero's drive info tool.

When I try to burn music using media player, it will burn the first track and then prompt me that it is closing the session. It always does this, will burn the first one, then fail.

In terms of Firmware...it is the latest one installed. I have found online firmware where the Region is unlimited for the dvd rom but I havent tried installing that as it is a beta.

Any other ideas? Can this have something to do with the mode used for data transfer?

I will try Nero 7 next. Are there any other progams I can use to burn music and movies other than Nero and Roxio that you would recommend? The others i have used have been hit and miss.

If you are trying to make back up copies of DVD's you own try this software.. DVD SHRINK.. I think it is discontinued but still works well; except with sony CD's...
