Problem with reading dvds

hi everyone
i 've got an asus dvd drive with the model name:dvd-e616p2
the problem is that it does n't read or recognize any dvd of any type regardless of data type(music,movie,data...)but it's got no problem with CDs the problem is just with DVDs and after i insert the dvd and wait for it 2 recognize after some longer than normal recognition time nothing happens even when i click on the dvd drive icon i get this message"please insert a disc into drive .."I have even updated the firmware and tried on windows 98 but still the same problem.
please help.

Confused

But I have never even touched the case interior You mean a software problem could cause that?!?!
How could I check this and make sure?

try a lens cleaner
get someone to try the drive in their computer and see if they strike the same problem
