BIOS does not recognize CDRW or DVD
I replaced the hard drive in mt DEll8250 by installing it as the slave, copying all the data from the original, removing the original and setting the bios to select. This worked well.
But without altering the cable or troubling the setup for the CDROM or DVD (on the same cable) the bios only recognized the CDrom at first, then shortl after didnt recognize either drive. The bios settings were on auto for both these secondary drives. What can i do?? I have also replaced the cable ensuring that it was installed the correct way, and this made no difference. Hi,
What you need to do is take both drives off the cable and set the jumpers for the one you want on the end of the cable as master. Then, set the one as slave and put it in the middle connector of the ribbon cable. I think that you simply have mixed jumper settings and it will not work that way. My recommendation is always to set a hard drive as master on the end of the ribbon cable. Other drives, your choice like if you have two CDRom drives or DVD drives on a cable. I do however, set the DVD types as master as a personal preference. When you have given this a try, post back.

Thanks for the interest. The DVD is at the end and the CDR in the middle of the cable. The HD is on a different cable to the DVD%CDR. I did not change the cabling until the problem had arisen, so i assume that the jumpers are OK. but even so I cannot find Samsung jumper positions as yet to determine what the jumpers are set to now.
I will keep looking but any further thoughts? Jimbo |

Hi,
You really need to check them all on any cable that does not work. Here is a link you need to take a look at for jumper settings: For Samsung hard disk drives, see http://www.samsung.com.

It appears that both the DVD (Samsung) and CDRW (HL data storage) are set at cable select.
As I know the cable to my HD is working, could I put one of these on that cable to see if the bios recognizes it? |

Hi,
No reason you could not try that if the jumper sequence matches. I do HIGHLY recommend the master/slave settings over Cable Select, but you have to make that choice for you. If one on that cable is cable select, they BOTH must be set to cable select. If it were mine, I would not do the cable select. Make sure the master one is on the end of the ribbon cable.

As discussed, iput my DVD on the ide1 cable as the slave to my HD and it is recognized, shows up in device manager. So my 2nd ide cable seems to be the problem, i checked the connections and they are OK, and the is a new cablw connected the way the old one was )red stripe in the correct position etc.......
Any further thoughts .. |

Hi,
Why not leave the DVD drive there or is there another drive you need to put on that cable? Then, set the CDRom as Master and place it on the end of that ribbon cable on IDE #2, and leave the middle connector empty? Will that work for you if it is alone on that cable, or do you need another slot for something? Have you tried another ribbon cable on that IDE connection?

Well, I replaced the IDE2 cable and set the jumpers to Master on the DVD and Slave on the CDrom, but no joy - the DVD was at the end of the cable. I then put the new cable in to IDE1 with the HD on select & the DVD on Select and they both work.
I put the IDE1 cable Which I know was OK into IDE2 with the CDrom set to master at the end of the cable and the BIOS will not recognize it and windows does not show the secondary controller or the CDrom in the device manager. It seems that my secondary does not work at all Any thoughts anyone. |

Hi,
Go to Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device manager and see if you have any yellow marks by any of the items.

Didnt have any yellow - but then I removed the battery from the motherboard, clearing the CMOS (the battery is now reporting low), and suddenly the 2nd IDE is OK. The DVD as master is working, recognized by the BIOS, but my CDrom (slave) is still not being recognized by the BIOS nor of course the device manager.
So now I will insert this CDrom in another computer and see if it is really dead. I will also buy another battery! Now ive discovered another interesting fact The bios will recognize the DVD when it is set as master on the end of the cable....but...when i put the CDrom in the middle set on slave, the bios does not recognize either the DVD not the CDrom. I double checked the jumpers and they are set as they should be. Last edited by jimbo1; 03-05-2006 at 04:09 PM. Reason: additional info |

Hi,
I agree with your process. I would replace the battery first and then if it does not work, take it to another computer. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

All is now OK
In summary The cures were the clearing of the CMOS and the replacement of the CDrom drive. The other stuff didnt seem to make any difference - changing the cable or the CMOS battery. Thanks to all who helped me through - esp tumbleweed who stuck it though. |
