Does the tray open? Can you try the drive in another system? Did you do anything before this failure that may have caused the problem, like a firmware flash? Try flashing the drive with newer firmware.

Is your DVD/RW a Philips 8631?
I had the same problem with my Philips DVD+RW. (Model 8631). I called my computer manufacturer and went through 75 minutes of doing nothing that helped. The DVD drive was DEAD! My system is still under warranty and they had to replace the drive. It was replaced with a Philips mod#8701. So far so good!
Good luck but you probably will have to replace the drive
