Roll Eyes [SOLVED] PC doesn't see cd drives

I have a CD-R and a CD-R/W that my computer suddenly doesn't see. Actually, it's not so sudden. It happened months ago but I haven't had the money to take it to get it fixed. The devices work - lights blink, doors open and close. But they don't show up on My Computer anymore. I've switched out the IDE cable and gone through uninstalling them in the hope that my computer would see them and re-install but nothing I've done has worked. In Device Manager, both drives have an exclamation point inside yellow circles. From what I've read, that might indicate a confllict but, a conflict with what? And, since I didn't use them for some time before I discovered this, I can't pin it down to anything I might have installed. HELP PLEASE!

Hi,

Let's start by backing up a little and doing a check of the basics. Make sure that one drive has the jumpers set to MASTER and placed on the END of the ribbon cable, and make sure the other drive has the jumpers set to SLAVE and placed in the MIDDLE of the ribbon cable.

When that is done, check to see if they are present in the BIOS Setup Menu meaning that they are recognized. If so, then see if you still have the yellow marks.

Post back when you get that double checing done.

Ok Tumble, I'm afraid you're going to have to be patient with me. I've checked but don't see anything on them labelled "jumpers". I can tell you that 1 end is plugged into the top drive (the CDR), the middle is in the 2nd drive (the RW) and then the IDE goes to the motherboard where it is labelled IDE2. In BIOS, the Secondary Master and Slave show the drives. The yellow circles with the exclamation points are next to these drives under DVD/CD ROM devices in the device manager.

I don't know if this helps, but when I go to the device properties for these, it says:
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

If you look on the back of the drives, you will see some pins with little (usually black or white) things called jumpers on the back of the drive. That is how you set them to be either master or slave

Here is a link with some pics that show what they look like:

Everything looks OK. I tried to update the drivers but it doesn't do anything. It looks for several seconds and then says that Windows cannot find a better match than the software I already have.
