Difference in dvd media?

What exactly is the difference between dvd-r, dvd+r, and dvd-ram disks? Is one better than the other? Also, can you recommend a dvd burning s/w package?

Thanks

@ CBass
That is too huge a question to answer here. I personally prefer +R media for my burners. From what I have read, the +R format is superior. Nero is a decent software package. Check these links:
DVD+R
DVD-R
DVD-RAM

I don't know much about the dvd-ram, but the dvd-r and dvd+r seem to have one basic difference ....
The dvd+r you can booktype .... meaning you can change the type to dvd-rom ..... that way it forced an older dvd player to look at the disc as a dvd-rom making it more likely to be recongized and play.

You can't do booktyping with dvd-r.

Nero seems to be the main s/w ....
