DVD Drive Skipping

My DVD drive on my laptop plays a movie find for about an hour but then starts skipping every few seconds so it is unwatchable. The first thing I did was google my problem and found that I needed to ensure DMA is enabled, but unfortunately I cannot find such an option because my drive is SCSI. The only options available for it under the Device Manager are sound controls. One thing to note about my computer is that it's a Dell 600m, which means it has terrible heating problems. To remedy this I have my lappy sitting on a Vantec LapCool2 at most times, as well as using an automated CPU undervolting program known as Centrino Hardware Control. Take note that I have tried running it at max voltage (18x) and min voltage (6x) and the skipping problem still happens, so I'm not sure that it's heat or voltage related. I would rule out any codec related problem because I can play VOB files just fine from my HDD. My hunch is that there is a bottleneck somewhere and hopefully there are settings which can be adjusted to remedy this. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
-Ketalis

@ ketalis
Welcome to TSF

Is the disks you are watching pre-recorded DVDs, or are they home-burnt DVDs? Is this a time-based problem like always after an hour or so, or is your problem with playback of the disk near the end of the movie? This would check for poor quality home-burnt discs.

Then could you try opening 'task manager' during your viewing and see what usage you CPU has during the skipping, to check a possible heat/CPU throttling issue

Keep us posted with your progress

Pre-recorded DVDs bought from the store.

Definately time based. Movies of varying lenghths all start getting choppy after about an hour.

Okay, I'll see what I can find out by checking the task manager.

One thing that I forgot to mention is that the DVD drive makes loud scanning noises when it skips. The other thing is that it now starts skipping immediately when I put a disk in. I have ran a disk cleaner on this drive numerous times and my computer is only several months old. Help?
