No success with SATA Burner

I have an Asus A8V Deluxe..Does anyone know if the Via SATA controller can
handle a Serial ATA Plextor device(PX-716AS)..In trying to burn DVD's i have made about 15 coaster's in the last three days...I would like some help in getting this machine up and running.

@ McDivot
Welcome to TSF
We will need more info from you. If the drive is recognized, then your VIA SATA controller will accept a SATA DVD-RW drive.

So what are your system specs and configuration for your HDDs and ROMs(master, slave, channel etc.)?

What burning software do you use?

Was there an error log? If so post it as an attachment using the 'manage attachmens' in the 'go advanced' reply window, please do not paste it into the post. If it is Nero, remove your serial number from the top of the error log.

What was your burning source?

What is the MID of your dvd media? Use DVDIdentifier from the link if you do not know.

@ McDivot
Thanks for the error log. Nothing definitive there that pinpoints a problem with a direct fix, but a few thoughts. Your Plextor should work when connected to the VIA SATA connectors. It will not work off the Promise controller.

Do all the other functions of the drive work, like cd reading/writing and dvd playback?

Have you ever had a successful burn on the Plextor?

Does the Pioneer burn/play/read OK?

Are you multi-tasking during a burn? If you are, don't. Don't touch any key or mouse. You may also benefit from closing all other programs during the burn.

Try unplugging the Pioneer USB drive.

Try removing all other burning programs using the Nero CleanTools and reinstall JUST Nero. Try a Nero CD-DVDSpeed burst rate test. Your burst rate should be at least 23MB/s. Post your results.

If that is OK, try a simulated burn in Nero. You may need a blank disk in the drive. It should not write to the disk.

On another note, your media selection could be better. IMHO dual-layer disks have not evolved to the point where they are capable of quality burns on a consistent basis. Add that to the fact that they are much more expensive per disk, and they become less appealing to me. I would recommend staying away from them until they make them better. Your other choices are middle to poor quality disks. Try some Verbatim 16x+R disks(MCC004) or any Taiyo Yuden YUDEN000T02 8X+R disks. They are usually available for $40/100 online. Then you can eliminate poor media as a cause, tho your burns are not even getting that far.
Try those things and post back.

Thumbs Up Working now

Hi Please.
Sorry i have taken so long to get back to you.
To update..fixed my problems by changing boards..
The A8V Deluxe is on the shelf. Will try to RMA it.
I installed a MSI KN8 Neo4 Platinum board.First time with this brand.Hope it lives up to it's reviews.
The Plextor SATA Burner and the Pioneer 110D both seem to work fine with
this board..Tried some Verbatim disks they work well in the Plextor.
Again, thanks for your help.

@ McDivot
Glad to hear you resolved your issues to your liking. Too bad you weren't able to get the ASUS working as it is a fine board.

The Verbatims will work very well with your Plextor. You can check your burn results with plextools or Nero CD-DVDSpeed disk quality test.

A little holiday bonus for you, an awesome Plextor forum

The answer is simple but frustrating: The greate SATA Plextor devices don't run with ASUS A8V and its VIA SATA controller. I have a Plextor 712SA running on the same board, had exactly the same problems with NERO (Error.log is identical to yours!!!). Reading from DVD/CD is perfect, but burning gives erors described.

Well, my Plextor is now a 712A !!! Yes, I removed the greate SATA-Bridge from the back of the device. It's now running as PATA at the IDE-Bus and the Errors are gone!!!

Great job Plextor, these SATA device only run on a hand ful of SATA controllers, and the compatibility list is faulty.

This is definitely my last Plextor!!!

Well, the A8V is quoted in the compatibilty-list for the PX716SA, so I would guess, that the 712SA should be too! Anyway, the 712SA was reconized by the A8V and I could burn *some* CD and DVD. But I was often getting errors after "Lead in". After I turned the SA into an A the drive burns flawless! So I would asume there is a more *complex* compatibility problem.

I think Plextor's compatibility list is faulty and incomplete. How can on ordenary customer decide by that list, if SATA is compatible with his/her motherbord/chipset? It is definitly too risky!

If I only would have known before...
