Angry Multiple Problems

I have just recently bought a new hard drive, which i had to put on my secondary channel with my sony dvd burner. now when i boot up, sometimes the hard drive is detected sometimes it isnt, but my dvd burner has completly disappeard and if it is detected i get a ATAPI - Incompatable error on boot up.
i have checked what it says on boot up and it detects it as " ATAPI Removable Media", it doesnt even show me what model. i have tried evrything possible in my bios settings, this is my last ditch effort to see if someone knows how to fix it. all i can think of at the momment is that hard drives and cd drives dont like bieng on the same channel.

can anyone help me????

P.S my hard drive is set as master but i dont see how that would matter.

My System

Make sure the cable is an 80 wire cable It will have colored connectors, Black for master , gray for Slave and blue to the mother board . if you CD was installed on the secondary already it was likely configured as master so change the jumpers on the HDD to slave or cable select plug it in to the gray connector. If the cable happens to be a 40 wire cable it will not work with the HDD.
