Toshiba SD-2502 DVD ROM

I have a Gateway laptop with the subject DVD ROM drive. It works for DVDs but will not even recognize a CD as being present in it. I see this was a problem mentioned here over a year ago, but I missed the resolution. The clean cloth with no liquid wipedown did not work. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try deleting the IDE channel the drive from within 'device manager' and restart your system. Windows will redetect the drive and hopefully set things right. If this fails, try to d/l and install all the updates for WinXP SP2(if this is what you are using) and try the delete trick again.

You may also want to check to see if there are firmware updates available for your drive from the Gateway website. Sometimes flashing new firmware will set things right.

also it could be the cd media. what brand of cds are you putting on your dvd-rom? does the dvd-rom act the same for any cd you pop in there?
