ND-2100AD Driver Issue
I am trying to burn a dvd and everytime i do it says "no removeable media detected in ND-2100AD... please insert media." I have a Dell 8400. The dvd's i am trying to use are DVD-R. The drive is a DVD+RW... is this the problem or do i have to update firmware. I already tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting to no effect.

I did a little more research and realized that the ND-2100AD can only write on +R or +RW... However, i have seen that there is something called "flashing" your drive to fool the drive into writing -R and -RW. I have the file and everything but it says that you need to be in DOS-Mode and you may end up ruining the drive if not done correctly.. has anyone ever done this that could maybe give me some tips? is it even worth it?

Do not know why you would want to "+RW" disks are X4 RW and "-" RW are X2 RW.

I dont understand your question... I found out that the ND-2100AD is only compatible with +R and +RW DVD's.. It does not recognize -R and -RW DVD's. Therefore i could not possibly write a dvd using my drive onto a -R DVD.
What i was told though was that i could update my firmware using a hacked version and trick it into thinking that the drive was really a ND-2500AD which is able to burn on all formats. This is called "flashing" your drive. My question was , is this worth it? I heard and read that you can do some serious damage to your drive if you screw up. IT also has to be done in true DOS Mode, not just a tab under windows. I have never worked in true DOS mode before. I think i might understand what you are saying now though. Are you asking me why i bought -R dvd's instead of +r ?? One more question.. can you use DVD+RW with movie files on them in a DVD player or does it not work. Only you can answer the 'is it worth it' question. Is burning on -R discs really important to you, instead of just getting some +R discs? You may be in an area that has no +R media, I don't know. I would probably not flash for the -R capability, as I like +R media better. I have flashed optical drives about 50 times, but I knew what I was getting and knew the risks if it went bad. I was prepared to buy a new drive if failed, but never had a failed flash. If you go slow and follow the directions given carefully, your flash should go fine if you choose to do so. You can sort of 'practice' by following all the steps until the 'final' step of no return, just to see if you are comfortable with it. As for the DVD+RW media, most new players will play the discs. Some may not like DVD+RW, but would accept 'bitset' discs...those are discs with their 'booktypes' changed from DVD+RW to DVD-ROM during the burn, but I am not sure if your drive/firmware is capable. I am sure the creator of the modded firmware knows its capabilities and has made you aware of them. There is no way to tell what your player likes until you try...sorry I wish it were easier. Keep us posted of your progress

Ok.. so i went out and bought some +R dvd's.. It recognized the media and everything... HOWEVER, When i tried to burn a dvd in Sonic MyDVD the writing of the files stops at like 75% and freezes. I noticed a label on the dvd's that they are 8X writeables. It said something about some drivers not haveing updated firmware which would then cause in some writing issues.. I thought i wouldnt need an update since my burner was a 16X . Where would i find the latest firmware for the ND-2100AD.
P.S. I tried www.rpc1.org but whenever i try to download the files i get this message about "advanced users only" and i cant find a link to download it. Is this the right site??? Pls help any would be thankful |

Sorry to hear you are still having trouble with your drive. There are still lots we can do, we just have to take it one step at a time to get it sorted out. You can get the latest firmware for your Dell drive from here. It is dated from Jan 2005, so not very recent. You drive is an 8x maximum speed burner, not 16X. The date is important as the media you have chosen may be newer to the market than the firmware, so the firmware defaults to a generic burn strategy and good things rarely happen. But flashing to the newer firmware is no guarantee of good things with your media. What media did you choose? What is the Media IDentification Code (MID) of the media? You can use DVD Identifier to discover the MID and it will look something like 'RITEK R03'. Was there an error message with SonicDVD at its failure point? If you have another failure, please save as .txt or write down the exact and entire error message. Do you have or use any other burning software? You may also benefit from defragging your HDD before burning and try not multitasking during a burn...if you have defragged and don't multitask..good for you

Ok i did some things.
I flashed my drive using the file you provided with no problems. I also defragged my computer. I dont know the MID for my discs but they are Memorex 8X DVD+R 4.7GB and 120min. When i was using Sonic there was no error message or anything.. all that happened was the burning froze and would not advance. I waited a good 15 mins and no other progress was made. The only thing i could think of was that the program just froze. I will try to burn the project again and let you know what happens. |
