DVD Burner no longer recognizing disks

Yeah basically. I have a dvd burner (HP 840B ATA) that-according to windows (Vista 32)-is working properly and is completely updated but doesn't show I have a disk in at all. Am I going to have to buy another burner? :

Oh I'm not a tech guru (at all) but I have done my own pc upgrades so I can be instructed on what to do next (I'd really like to not have to buy another one...), so please use idiot speak and we'll be all good!

In all seriousness, thanks in advance for helping me out.

Re: DVD Burner no longer recognizing disks

You could try a variety of discs, commercial and burned, CD's and DVD's to see if it still recognizes anything. But I would suspect the drive has failed. Aside from trying to clean it out with a spray of canned air, there isn't much to be done.

Re: DVD Burner no longer recognizing disks

Uninstall the optical drive in Device Manager and reboot the PC.
If that doesn't work try this: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...cd_dvd_fix.htm

Most likely you have a failed drive.

Ok I'll try uninstalling the drive, but I am on Windows Vista, that program says it's only good for XP...

Oh SORRY I forgot to mention that it's recognizing cd's, and game disks, but not dvds and it's not a compatibility issue because I've had these disks for a while and they worked before. (not a while as in like 2 years or anything)

Anyways you're probably right but I wanted to make sure I tried everything first, before going and buying another dvd burner.

Re: DVD Burner no longer recognizing disks

Then it sounds more likely that it's a failing drive.
