Ongoing problems with cd/dvd ROM

My cd/dvd ROM on my laptop (sony vaio VGN-N38E) used to work 1 in 20 times using vista. Now I have windows 7 it still doesnt work. The light on the drive flashes when a CD is inserted and it makes a noise for about 2 seconds then stops. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix it?

Does the drive showup in My computer window?

Also check the device manager, are there any error icons for the dvd drive? go into the properties and on the driver tab, click driver details and do you see a pxhlp20 file listed in there?

Uninstall the optical drive in Device manager and reboot. Windows will reinstall when rebooted.
Laptop optical drives are generally low quality and are prone to early failure.
