DVD Rewriter GSA-T20N For Toshiba Equim...

Does a Toshiba Equim L40-14I require a specific internal DVD Rewriter..?

The current one in my laptop is broken (Super Multi DVD Writer, Model GSA-T20N).. Do i require this type or will any DVD Rewriter fit any laptop...?

That one is going to depend on the connection type. If it uses the sata connection (two small connectors next to each other) then you should be able to replace it with another sata drive just fine (in theory it should work, I've never done it or heard of it being tried though, but sata is usually universal)

If it is an IDE drive, then you need to get the Toshiba part number from the drive and replace it with that part number. Otherwise it may not work.
