XP cannot read CD/DVD discs

I am posting this question on behalf of my other.
She runs on XP SP3 and after recently formatting a laptop (Acer Travelmate 4200) that her friend gave her and reinstalling everything the CD/DVD rom drive will not read discs.

At first it read just fine (obviously, we were able to install from disc) but now after getting it up to speed after running Fdisk it shows no drive whatsoever.

I don't know what happened. She installed SP3 and did a few other things a I went to work on it one day and it was no longer there.

We have done the general uninstall the drive and reboot. No luck. Microsoft Support is well Microsoft Support.

If anybody knows what we should do with her computer them I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: XP cannot read CD/DVD discs

No luck. I don't know what the heel happened with the machine. I know this si a norm with XP and installing updates and burning software. After running the above mentioned fix from Tyree and checking the connection and going through all the general steps. I'm at a loss. If anyone else has any suggestions then please open the floor.

Re: XP cannot read CD/DVD discs

Is the drive recognized by the BIOS? Is the drive listed in Device Manager? Is the drive listed in Computer Management / Disk Management?

Re: XP cannot read CD/DVD discs

The drive is connected. It has a little activity every now and then. The light will flash and it makes some noise. then it stops.

It's not under Device Manager and under the Disk Management area. The BIOS? I don't think it recognizes it either on the basis that upper/ lower filter deletion has just seemed to make things more difficult.

Don't quote me I'm not a pro, but my knowledge and logic adds up to the case but not solution.

Re: XP cannot read CD/DVD discs

Have you checked the cables to the drive?
Can you try the drive in another PC?
Can you try another drive in the problem PC?
You could try a System Restore to a time before SP3 was installed?

Re: XP cannot read CD/DVD discs

Okay restored all the way back to format and at this point I think the connection is just screwed. So we're going to operate again tomorrow.

Honestly, I suggested just throwing it out the window but remembered we're trying to fix it.

Other than dust and abuse what could cause disruption in the connection.
