[SOLVED] cd-rom doesn`t read dvds, but reads cds

hi...this morning I was about to burn to dvd-rom, and when I put the cd inside, the computer won`t recognize it...plus, it makes some weird sound...but...cds work...can you save me from buying a new drive ?
I reinstalled xp and won`t work again

this could be a lazer problem where it doesn't actvate when dvds are running.

you could try a few fixes

try disabling the device in device manager and then do a reboot to see if it works

try deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry

buy a new drive

unfortunately lazers do fail they are the most common bit to fail in a dvd drive.

ok...the filters didn`t work...please, tell me how much would cost a cd-rom drive ( that reads dvds too )???

Well I am in the uk not sure were you are but you can get them for about £15 were I live thats about $25
