[SOLVED] DVD burner problem

I have a DVD burner that is not reading CDs. I have inserted CD-Rs and store bought audio CDs. When I do so I go to my computer and then D drive and then I get a pop up message that says "Please insert a disk into drive D:." When I insert a DVD into the burner it as able to read the DVD.

My computer is using Windows 2000

The DVD burner is

I hope this is enough information to get the ball rolling.

Thanks.

Re: DVD burner problem

You have the symptoms of a failing drive. Try Uninstalling the drive in Device manager and reboot. Windows will reinstall on boot.
You can also give this s try: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...cd_dvd_fix.htm

Re: DVD burner problem

Thanks. I'll give this a shot when I get home from work. But I won't be able to use the link because it is only for XP and I am running 2000.

Re: DVD burner problem

Try the link anyway. It just removes filters and will do no harm.

Re: DVD burner problem

I did the uninstall and reboot. Same problem. Then I ran the link and reboot with the same problem. I then did another uninstall and reboot and still the device will read a DVD but not a CD. Is there any information I should post about the computer to help on your end? Thanks.

Re: DVD burner problem

If it is reading DVD's but not CD's )or vice versa, it is a failing drive.

So my question now is how does the failing drive get repaired? Do I install new drivers or have to replace some hardware? The computer is an old IBM with Windows 2000. Thanks.

Re: DVD burner problem

Failing as in hardware failure. Pitch it and buy a new one. Computer type and OS is irrelevant. You just need to know the type (IDE or SATA). Being an older PC, it is likely an IDE drive. You can get CD/DVD drives for under $20, CD/DVD burners starting at about $30...less if you find one on sale.
