Hey guys. New here and I have abit of a problem which I haven't been able to figure out on my own.
I've bought an external harddrive closure and put one of my SataII drives in it to server as a backup drive. The enclosure has eSata so my goal was/is to use the eSata port to avoid losing too much/if any speed transfering files to and from the drive (compared to the alternative USB2). So anyway, last night after assembling the thing and connecting it to the computer I managed to get Windows to recognise it and display it as an internal harddrive - once. To test if the system could handle a hotswap (ie. turning the drive off while the system is running), I unplugged the drive but Windows didn't let go of the drive. I accessed it and the system froze up (Waiting for the drive to seek I suppose). I hit the reboot switch after a few seconds and now I can't get the drive back in Windows. It appears in the device manager just fine and in drive management (the administrative tool) but it doesn't recognise the partition and gives out an error when I click properties on the partition. The drive is fine by the way, tested it with USB2 afterwards and it plugs the harddrive in just fine. Can you help me figure out how to get the harddrive back to working state in Windows with eSata and possibly help me make it hotswappable. (I tried turning on Raid AHCI in the BIOS but it makes the system BSOD on loadup and slows down the POST boottime by ages) Many thanks in advance for any feedback ![]() Flatline |

Re: Issues with eSata - Won't appear anymore in Win7
Unless I'm mistaken, you have to use the "safely remove disks" app.
Shutdown, disconnect the drive, bootup. If the drive is still listed in Disk Manager, remove/delete it, reboot and ensure the drive is still not listed. Assuming it isn't, shutdown, connect the drive, power the drive on, then boot your PC.

Re: Issues with eSata - Won't appear anymore in Win7
I figured it out on my own but thanks for taking the time to reply nonetheless. My solution was to change a registry entry in Windows to allow for the ACHI driver to run (thereby avoiding the BSOD when it was turned on in the BIOS). Now the harddrive works flawless. :)
