[SOLVED] dvd drive problems

hi, my first post!

my DVD drive is playing up. the drive opens and closes, makes the right noises (scientific) but nothing happens if i stick a CD in and the D:\ doesn't appear in My Computer

on device manager the DVD drive appears with a (!) symbol. it says
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hadware, The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)."

i went through the windows troubleshooter which suggested uninstalling and reinstalling the device - no better

then i tried updating the drivers from the NEC website

if i run the .exe file i get the error
"Target NEC ND-3520A is not found correctly."

no info on the NEC website about what to do next after this error

anyone got any suggestions? i am pretty desperate as i need to install some software to do my thesis!

uninstall the drive from the device manager and reboot
