DVD drive not detected in Bios

Hi there,
I have an Asus P5E deluxe motherboard. Computer is running fine.
I want to exchange my old IDE DVD drive with a new Sata DVD drive.
If I plugin the Sata DVD drive, without any Sata harddrives connected, the DVD drive is detected by the Bios. If I then add any Sata HDD's, no device is detected in the Bios (no DVD, no HDD). I tried differend Sata settings but no success.
Any suggestions?

Check for a BIOS update. Some of the older motherboards have issues with SATA CD/DVD drives.
