Hi do you have any burning software on you machine ie nero,roxio,or some free program this could cause a issue if you have it try unistalling it and try the manula steps in the last link

No burning software. the "fix it for me" didnt work because it didn't load right, but it wouldnt have worked if it did load, because i went through the manual steps and found that i have no...

"lower filters"

which, according to the description, means that fix doesn't apply to me. im truly baffled. it just randomly stopped working, I cant trace it back to any particular install of any programs.

You can try removing/deleting the drive from Device Manager and rebooting.

If that doesn't work, try removing/delting the drive from Device Manager and also removing/deleting the IDE controllers, and then rebooting.
