Problem with dvd burner, can't fix myself
my pc is an E-Machines T3092, Amd Athlon(tm) XP, 1.20 GHz, 1.5 GB of RAM, Microsoft Windows Xp Home Edition version 2002 Service pack 3, everything is stock except for a LG dvd burner model: gsa-h54n. The D and E drives(the D drive is the LG dvd burner and the E drive is the stock cd burner) dissapered from "My computer" I then restarted my computer and they were there. As i was about to burn some movies they disapeared. I noticed that the bios was recognizing them so i opened add newhardware and then when i scanned for new hardware it said that nothing was found but when i went to "My Computer" they were there and then same thing happened again when i tried to burn the movies again. I went online and tried to find out what was wrong with it. I found someone with the same problem and a person told them to do this:
********************************************************** What's happened is that there's been a change made in your system registry. To solve this: 1. Click Start, then Run, then enter REGEDIT to open the Registry Editor 2. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ CurrentControlSet/Control/ Class entry 3. Under the Class entry, double click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 4. In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the UpperFilters entry 5. Make sure the UpperFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes 6. In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the LowerFilters entry 7. Make sure the LowerFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes 8. Close the Registry Editor by clicking File, Exit 9. Reboot your computer and you should find that your icon(s) have reappeared ********************************************************** After my PC rebooted they were there again so i tried to burn the same movies again and once again they disapeared. I kept looking around the internet and found this in a fourm: ********************************************************** If you can not see your CD/DVD drive in My Computer but BIOS setup can still see it (or you can still boot using a bootable CD), use the Microsoft Fix it tool or follow the instructions on the link below to recover: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/ ********************************************************** When i downloaded the Microsoft Fix It tool and ran it. i started the program and said that all of my settings on my computer were the same as the ones it was going to try and put.but before you start the tool it said that nero or other burning programs plus itunes could mess with your CD/DVD drive. I proceeded to uninstalled nero and itunes and rebooted my computer. My D drive then came back but not my E drive. I downloaded CDburnerXP to replace nero and i used it to burn the movies. so i thought everything was ok but i downloaded some more movies and when i went to burn them once again they dissapeared. so the problem was not fixed after all and is still messing with me. i have run a full virus and spyware/addware scans and everything is clean and no viruses Anyone with any input to offer on the subject i would appriciate the help, thank Tyler Last edited by tylerbailey; 10-18-2009 at 12:37 PM. |

Re: Problem with dvd burner, can't fix myself
Try disconnecting one drive at a time. One failing drive can hinder the operation of the other.
It's also possible the IDE cable is defective. Try each drive on each connector of the IDE cable.
