CDROM Drive Disappeared
Compaq Deskpro CDROM Disappeard
i have an older compaq deskpro EN series "Small Form Factor". this computer has a small cd rom drive similar to a laptop. i suddenly noticed that the cdrom drive is no longer listed in "my Computer" or "device manager" or even in the bios. i checked the connections which were OK. when i put a disk in the drive it spins up and runs for a minute or so and the stops. meanwhile, no sign on the screen of the presence of the drive..i couldnt find any help for this from Compaq ( now H.P.) the Label on the drive gives the compaq model no. CRN8241B 24X but seems totally unheard of by H.P. ComPuter - Compaq Deskpro EN Series SFF O.S. Win2000 Prof. ( not sure if this was original OS) but drive was working fine before.... |

Re: CDROM Drive Disappeared
Most likely the drive has failed and it doesn't matter much what you do, it's not going to come back. Your options are to either replace the drive with a compatible one or get an external unit. The laptop sized drives can be more costly than getting an external drive, but the external drives function best using USB 2.0 ports as opposed to the older 1.1 version ports. You can add USB 2.0 port with a simple and cheap add-in card if that's the way you want to go.

Re: CDROM Drive Disappeared
If you go external, purchasing the enclosure and optical drive separate is the better choice. Prebuilt externals tend to use enclosures with low quality circuitry.
