[SOLVED] burn errors-bad burner or bad discs?

Can anyone tell me whither this is a burner problem or bad discs? Three Sony DVD-R discs in a row triggered these Event Viewer messages. XP Device Manager reports device working OK. CDBurnerXP Pro used. System info below.

Re: burn errors-bad burner or bad discs?

Sony media is certainly of questionable quality.
My first suggestion would be to try some quality media.
Taito Yuden & Verbatim are the best readily available brand.
LG optical drives are good but they all fail eventually.
What type of date were you attempting to burn?
Have you tried a different burning software?

Re: burn errors-bad burner or bad discs?

Thanks for the response. I have had the LG burner for less than a year - my first SATA optical drive. It's been flawless! I agree about Sony's inconsistent quality - I have long preferred TDK. The Sony discs were on sale ! I hadn't known that Verbatim was considered one of the best - I have used them at times without problems - I'll try them again. I have never seen the Taito Yuden brand here in Hawai'i but I'll ask around - where are they made ?
The data I was trying to burn was an ordinary DVD movie - DVD9, reduced to DVD5 with DVDShrink. This is the kind of burn I do several times a day, thus the concern at the failures.

Re: burn errors-bad burner or bad discs?

check for a firmware update for the drive

try burning at a slower speed

try cleaning the laser

try a new data cable on the drive

Re: burn errors-bad burner or bad discs?

Try another burning app....I recommend ImgBurn. It's one of the best and it's free. If you still have the problem, it's media (most likely) or burner.

As for media, DVD+/_R SL : Verbatim and Taio Yuden have the highest quality and are the most consistent performers. All other brands are trial and error with results depending upon the burner, firmware version, and software used. For DVD+R DL media, Verbatim is the only way to go.

For testing your discs, you can use a tool such as DVD Info Pro ( http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ ).

Re: burn errors-bad burner or bad discs?

If you burn several times a day then a year is a lot of burning. It is possible the drive is failing.

Grin Re: burn errors-bad burner or bad discs?

Aloha, Dogg - you've come through again ! Also, thanks to Tyree for useful info. I think I've isolated the problem to a conflict between the burning s/ware CDBurnerXP and the Sony DVD-R discs. I have ImgBurn and always use it for image file burns (.iso, .img, etc.). This time, I tried Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 (freeware version). I sometimes use it to erase DVD-RW discs because CDBurnerXP often has a problem with those. The burns went through without any problems. Same brand of discs, same files - different results ! Also, 2 .iso burns with ImgBurn were sucessful. I haven't yet tried ImgBurn on non-image files (.avi, etc) but later today....

As both of you are high on Verbatim, I'll put them at the top of my list for the next time I buy. Are the Taito Yuden brand discs sold under any other brand name? I can't find any source for these here in Hawai'i .

OT, but... Dogg, I think your solution to the BSOD/transcoding problem was correct. All such operations now go through cleanly. Reducing RAM from 4gb to 2gb eliminated the problem. Again, many thanks !!
regards, daboo

Re: burn errors-bad burner or bad discs?

No problem, glad I could help.

I've never seen Taio Yuden on store shelves, I always mail order mine. Now that you have everything working, you may not need to change brands at all. You can use an app like I noted above to test the discs after to burn them for errors. If they test error free, then you are good to go. It is good to have some quality, known good media onhand for testing new hardware or software.

As for the other issue, RAM is still pretty cheap. I'd grab a matched pair (2 x 2GB) and enjoy.

Re: burn errors-bad burner or bad discs?

Now I'm puzzled !! The RAM issue solution was REDUCING RAM (from 4gb to 2gb). Doing that seems to solved the problem. No BSODs since !
