Can Only Fill Flash Drive to Half Capacity

I've been having trouble for a few months now trying to fully use my flash drives. I usually fill them up with mp3 files and use them in my car stereo, but a few months ago I could no longer fill my 1 gig flash drive up any more than about 560 mb.
After I get to about 560 mb I keep getting the error message saying "Cannot copy filename: The directory or file cannot be created".

I finally got fed up with trying to wipe the drive clean of anything that might be hiding on there, running virus scans, reformatting, and all that jazz trying to fix it and bought a new 2 gb flash drive.
The first time I plugged it in I had the exact same problem: I can't fill the new flash drive past the 560 mb mark either.

The only thing I can guess is that my primary USB port is damaged [it will only read a drive for a second or two before losing the connection] and it's done something to the flash drives, but no matter which port I use I get the same result, and I've tried using other computers and non-music files as well,
but I keep getting the "Cannot copy" message.
The flash drives I currently have are a SanDisk Cruzer [1 gb], and Sony Microvault [1 gb], and the new one is a Crucial Gizmo [2 gbs].

Anyone else have this problem or know what I should be doing?
Thanks
