Burn DVD - How To

As a newbie I had to ask this question,

Now before you give me grief that there might be another thread that explains my question I have to say that right now I cant use the search function on here for some reason due to my work comp so if you got some easy links to help, let me know.
I burned a DVD today with Burn express 4.7 I believe and well I got an error on my DVD player that there was no play function. Now I know for sure I was suppose convert these torrent vids that I got thru some kind of software but I was able to drag my files into my burner software and thats when I figured maybe I found some shortcut to burning DVD's. Well I was wrong....any help with this proces. I know how to burn music...but I havent figured this DVD process yet. :) I do have Ashampoo, Nero 6 express, VSO convert software (I dont know how to use this software for some reason but got it at a good price). This is all the stuff I have at my disposal but dont know what to use.
(I dont have any problems paying for software that makes things easier but if I can get it for free, why not)
