DVD RW problem

Hi everyone. I've got a really perplexing problem that I would really appreciate some home with.

I am unable to use the DVD RW drive on my Compaq Presario desktop. It has Vista.

If I insert a CD, the computer is able to read the disc, but unable to play it. If I insert a DVD or data disc, the computer is unable to even read it.

I've already taken as many actions as I'm aware of to fix the problem. I have installed new hardware and the problem remains the same. I have spent three hours on the phone with HP's tech support, which began with uninstalling the driver and trying to open the discs using different applications, etc., and ended with a system recovery being done, but that did not work either.

Can anyone offer some thoughts in terms of any other steps I might be able to take? Thanks.
