Ext. drive corrupt file/directory
Hi, I know there seem to be quite a lot of threads about this problem, but I can't seem to find the actual answer to my problem. Hope you guys can help out.
Have a 500G Simpletech ext. usb drive. Been working fine and all of a sudden now it says "E:\not accessible, file and directory corrupt and unreadable." When I check property of the drive, it shows it as 0 bytes in RAW format. Tried to run chkdsk under cmd prompt, but it says "The type of the file system is NTFS. Unable to determine volume version and state. Chdsk aborted" I am currently running Stellar Phoenix Windows Datarecovery and it's scanning, but if there's a way to just fix the drive without having to recover all the data and reformat it again, I'd prefer to do that since I'll have to find another drive to download all the recovered files to. So is there a way to run fix disc or something? It can't seem to do anything under windows since it's not recognizing the file type. I read from threads I should take it apart and install the drive into the computer as int. drive....is this really necessary? I am hoping for the simplest solution. Essentially just correcting the file errors that's causing this corrupt file/directory problem. Thanks for your help. |

Re: Ext. drive corrupt file/directory
I tried to run data recovery with Stellar Phoenix Windows data recovery, but the computer seem to get frozen after scanning for a long time.
Any other ideas to fix my problem? Thanks |

Re: Ext. drive corrupt file/directory
The biggest problem with pre-built external drives is the failing of the internal circuitry. The drives are usually OK. IF it is out of warranty, you can open it up and use a Hdd to USB adapter or use an external enclosure to connect it to your PC and extract the data.
If the drive is OK, you can continue to use it in the external enclosure. Adapters: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...der%20Changers I use this one in my shop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...0USB%20adapter I prefer these enclosures for 2.5 in. Hdd's, they come with a version of Acronis: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817155602
