OS: xp prof 2002 SP3
|
I have an HP Pavilion 8670C purchased originally as a Windows 98 computer in 1999. It was subsequently upgraded to Windows XP Pro 2002 SP3 around 2003. IT has worked fine until I decided to add fixed disc storage recently. I initially opened up the system and saw that I could not do an internal drive. I had removed and labeled cables for the CD and DVD drives so that I access the drive slots without breaking a cable. I asssumed that I reinstalled them correctly. I added a USB 2 board and an external Maxstor drive.
Then we noticed that when we used the CD or DVD drives for read or write, the system would freeze (e.g. keyboard, mouse and CD/DVD eject are locked up possibly looking for an interrupt). All else works if not using whe CD or DVD drives. I restored the cables as follows: - CD drive (TEAC CDW54E) is Master on 40 pin IDE ribbon, Power cable has 3 of each (4) colored wires plugged in and has the other two wires going to two other power plugs for secondary drives. The audio cables appear identical and have been swapped without any impact. - DVD drive is Slave on the same IDE ribbon that the CD drive is Master on. It used the power cable that has the most appropriate length which comes from the CD power cable. It uses an audio cable which I have indicated has been swapped with the one on the CD drive without impact. -There is a small female power plug which appears to plug into a socket with four tiny wires. It is not plugged in because I don't recall unplugging it and I do not see an appropriate socket. The HP user's manual does not go into any real detail on any of the wiring. Also, today I accidentally pulled off the jumper on the DVD drive (Pioneer DVD ROM DVD 114). I think I replaced it correctly, but I cannot find a Pioneer users manual to verify that I have the correct jumper setting. This could introduce a new problem, but it postdates all of the other problems. |
