DVD/CD Writer issue
Model: Samsung SH-S222 (Shows up in Device Manager as: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-222A ATA Device)
Bought this last week on Newegg, didn't come with a CD, but that was fine since drivers installed automatically. My memory is a little sketchy (had way more serious hw issues), but I think I remember this drive working. Anyway the problem is as follows: When I boot into Vista x64 or Win 7 on one computer, or Vista 32bit on another computer, the device shows up like it should, in My Computer and Device Manager, etc. When I put a CD or DVD in, it would just keep spinning. The green led keeps flashing like its reading the disk, or trying to, but it ultimately fails. Usually what happens is that My Computer freezes. Now the weirder part: When I put in my Ubuntu (or Vista) installation disk, and try to boot from CD Drive from BIOS, it works. It successfully loads and reads from the disk. Didn't try actually installing from it (will later), but for Ubuntu I could run the "Check Disk Integrity" option, if that means anything for the actual disk drive. From this I guess the hardware works? I dunno . Any help would be awesome

Re: DVD/CD Writer issue
Sounds like you might still have some other hardware issues since it will boot into Linux but won't read.
Posting your PC specs would be a good place to start.

how do i go about updating the firmware?
specs: comp 1: win 7 64 bit / vista 64 bit intel i7 3x2gb DDR3 ram nvidia gtx 260 wd 640 gb hd comp 2: vista 32 bit intel dual core something ddr2 ram, 3 gigs and i just tried it on this comp and it worked. it's an xp. any explanations? drivers maybe? the drive itself didn't come with a cd with drivers, and i tried searching online but no result: comp 3: xp 32 bit intel pentium 4 1 gig DDR2 ram Anyways, i'll try my other comps again. maybe i just didn't plug it in right or something. nope, just tried comp #1.. no luck. also, i just updated the firmware after searching online. still nothing on that comp. i guess it just doesn't like vista/ win 7? which is weird, since other people who bought it from newegg seem to have it working just remembered: on both of my failed computers, i have another CD drive connected to it, using a SATA port (the one in question is IDE). is this an issue? the jumper in the ide one is set to master. Re: DVD/CD Writer issue
first try uninstalling it from the device manger and rebooting
if no good try uninstalling and reinstalling your burning software

Re: DVD/CD Writer issue
like i've written above, i've tried it on 3 computers already. it didn't work on two of em. i have two cables that i used on all 3, and on the one that works, both cables are fine, so i guess its not the cable. the thing that is different about the comp that it worked on is that it was running xp, but that's still weird since other people who have bought it on newegg have used it without a problem
