CD/DVD not reconized
Due to illness I haven't used my desktop computer but a couple of brief times in the past few months, I have been using a laptop instead. I bought a new printer and started to install it. When it came time to insert and use the CD that came with the printer, I noticed neither of the two CD/DVD drives in the computer were being recognized. I was wondering if something simple is doing this and/or where to start in correcting this. The OS is XP Media. Help is appreciated.

Re: CD/DVD not reconized
Check and see if the CD/DVD drives show up in the BIOS of the computer. Usually if you press F2 when the computer is booting up (on the first image) you'll be able to get into there and the CD/DVD drives should be listed with your hard drive. You might need to press a different button, but the first image that pops up in the first few seconds of the boot cycle should tell you what button to press. If you see the Windows screen, you missed your chance to get into the BIOS and need to try again.
If they aren't listed, it might be a problem with the cord they are attached to inside the computer or where they plug into on the motherboard. Since they are both dead, I'd think this is more likely than both the CD drives dieing. If they are listed in the BIOS, then it is probably a problem with Windows and we can go from there. As a temporary solution, if you go to your printer's manufacturer's website you can download all the software that's on the CD and install the printer that way until you get your CD drive working. |
