Burner burns DVDs not CDs
Ok I have an eMachines W5243 with stock everything except an added 80 gig HDD.
Here's my problem, my burner worked perfectly and I was able to burn full CDs the first 2 months that I've had the computer. Then I just didn't burn CDs anymore, just DVDs. So now that I got a CD player for my car I want CDs.... Just one problem, I'm not able to make, or at least the burner doesn't want to complete the burn process. I've got an AMD Athlon 2.6Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 250Gb HDD and an 80 Gb backup HDD, the drive that's pissing me off is a SONY Optiarc DVD-RW AD-7200A Along with that I'm running on Windows Vista Home Premium w/ SP2 v.286 I've tried the ignorant community of Yahoo! Answers so I'm now looking for good advice :) One thing I think you guys should know, I've tried burning CDs on Windows Media Player 11, JetAudio Plus 7.0.5 VX and CDBurnerXP 4.2.4. I've tried discounted Memorex CD-R disks and Maxell CD-Rs. I've ruled out the programs AND the blanks. Also, I've had my GF burn the CDs, they work! So I KNOW IT'S MY COMPUTER! Lastly, I have been known to answer my own questions before so I'ma try it out. Could the fact that I can't burn be because of the Vista SP2 Beta? Thanks and I'm looking forward on conquering my computer. It has won the battle but I wanna win the war!

Re: Burner burns DVDs not CDs
have you thought about updating the firmware?
whats the model # for your DVD/CD burner? go to control panel device manager and look for your DVD burner and tell me the name of it you could just forget the hassle and buy a new DVD burner they're like $24 |

Re: Burner burns DVDs not CDs
I've already tried but I just got the generic driver from Windows. And it's an Sony Optiarc AD-7200A drive.

Re: Burner burns DVDs not CDs
I'm not sure but I think I found the issue. The disks I was using the first time were generic disks that were 32x CD-R on top of that Vista SP2 BETA was making me have issues.
I removed SP2 BETA and now I can burn top line disks... SONY & Maxell.
