Cubase sx 3 and sata issue

Hi ,
I have a dell dimension 9200 running xp sp 2 with 2 sata internal dvd/cd burners (it just came with these)My problem is cubase sx 3 and wavelab 5 both freeze when i try the 'import audio from cd' function from their menus.i swithched off one of the sata drives in the bios (and disconnected it) and still the freeze. when i disconnected both drives cubase finally stopped freezing and it showed an empty window with no cd drives available for import. is it possible that cubase has problems with sata connections? i have an old ide cd/dvd burner that works with both programs (from my last pc)but i dont have ide connection in my pc.

1.does anyone know a sata burner that will work with these two programs?
2. Is it possible to connect my old burner through some form of ide pci controller card? if so what kind? there seems so many different ones?
by the way i have all current firmwares for drives

any help would be appreciated,

Tom.
