matshita uj-840d probs?

Hi all. I am currently having difficulty with my Matshita UJ-840D cd/dvd rom. It recognises every cd-rom inserted into apart from My Win XP that i have. It wont boot from CD or ask me to press any key to do so. Yet when i place my xp cd into my external cd drive it is picked up. but im scared to do a fresh instal from an external. Hope you can help. Many many thank yous in advance.

I am using Win XP on a Sony Vaio VGN-FS315m
