[SOLVED] Both optical disk drives not reading files

Hi,

I have some photos i have burned to a DVD. I thought i would check they burnt ok, only to discover that my computer thinks they are corrupt.

So, i try the DVD in my other drive on the same computer, and that also thinks they are corrupt.

However, i take the same disk to my laptop at work, and that reads them ok. I take the same disk to a friends PC, and yes she can see them ok.

I then try to look at older DVD's which i burnt, and sure enough, none of them are working on my PC (majority seem to be corrupt). Both optical drives are showing the photos as thumbnails, but when i click on them, they are corrupt.

Why both my optical drives should be doing this is very strange. Especially since i can view them ok on other computers. I've had a look in Device Manager and nothing is showing as wrong. I have virus checked my PC with Norton.

Very confusing!

If anyone has any advice, that would be most welcome.

Thanks

Re: Both optical disk drives not reading files

You may need to update drivers - you can do this by going to Device Manager and r-click on device and go to update drivers.
If that doesn't work have a look at this - you may need to delete upper and/or lower filters in your registry.
Follow the instructions to the letter - don't play with anything else in your registry unless you know what you are doing - registry errors can make a good computer into a good doorstop!
If when you get to where the filters are supposed to be and they aren't there - then you don't have them and that won't be the cause of your problem - don't go looking for them elsewhere in the registry.

Re: Both optical disk drives not reading files

Hi Zuluclayman,

Well, i did try your idea of updating the drivers. The wizard comes back and tells me that the drivers are up to date.

I noticed there was a tab on my Volume properties called "UDF Reader" by Sonic, which i don't think i have any need for, i deleted that, to no avail.

I have yet to take the leap into the registry. I am still baffled as to why my PC can write files to disk but has problems reading them back with either optical drive.

Hmmm. It used to work. Grrr!

The other strange thing is when i copy the file from disk to my hard drive, the preview (or thumbnail) of the Photo is fine, it's when i open it it's corrupt.

Re: Both optical disk drives not reading files

Hi Zuluclayman,

It's over! I seem to have gotten rid of it.

I did the following:

* as mentioned above, i got rid of the Sonic UDF reader which was a tab on the Properties page on my optical drives - this didn't seem to work however.

* i had already uninstalled the drivers for the drives, then scanned for new hardware, and this didn't make a change

* i tried updating the drivers and Windows told me that i was using the most up-to-date driver already (from 2001)

* however, i tried once again by uninstalling the drives, then shutting down the computer. This time, on re-boot when it "found new hardware" - it worked!

iTunes
Another *Bonus* for me is that i tried, once again to backup my iTunes onto DVD. Much to my surprise this also worked again (it had stopped working recently, i wasted several blank DVD's trying to get it to work). This also had me confused since the same brand of DVD disc used to back up iTunes ok.

So, i'm not sure what the problem was. It may have been this "UDF Reader" from Sonic. Not sure.

I'm just pleased it's working again, since it all seemed "virus" like.

Thanks again Zuluclayman.

Frosm.

Re: Both optical disk drives not reading files

Glad you got it working - and shared your solution with us. Most likely the proper sequence for re-installing drivers did the trick (uninstall device then reboot)
