Evil Trouble with Toshiba Samsung DVD Writer

Model no. is SH-S182D. I only have one IDE port on my motherboard, and two hard drives, so I have it in an external enclosure and plugged into computer with a USB cable.

Every time I plug it in, XP tells me there's a problem.

When I go to Device Manager, there's a little yellow exclamation point on the device, which is labeled TSSTCorp CD/DVDW SH-S182D USB Device.

When I right-click and go to Properties, Device Status says "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

On the Driver tab, driver version is 5.1.2535.0 and I can't find ANY updated drivers online.

The thing worked for several months, and then just didn't show up in My Computer one day. Thought it might be something wrong with the enclosure or the hardware, so I plugged the whole setup into another computer and it worked just fine.

What the heck is wrong with my drive?
