Driver Error 39 when using CD drive [Moved from XP]

Hello every one, welcome to my first post.

I have an old dell inspiron 5100. some how contracted a virus whilst looking up rx7/ vw videos. I downloaded AVG free to help rid the virus, or atleast lock it up in a vault. since then my computer has still ran like poop. Can't do much with it, so I said, what the hell. time for a reformat. get rid of everything and start anew..

Not so easy to do with an error 39 code.
"Windows cannot install this device. The driver may be missing or corrupted"

Thats what it says when I try to use my cd-rom. SPECS: QSI SBW 242

So far I've cleaned my registry and erased the upper and lower filters on it. Went on down to the device manager. uninstalled the device, re-installed.. no luck. I've even un-installed the primary and secondary channels on the ata/atap? Re-boot. Nothin. Any other options? pLease HElP!!!

Re: Driver Error 39 when using CD drive [Moved from XP]

Thanks for the link. I've swept up those registries already. Didn't work, i have itunes installed for cd/dvd burning. Although, I've recieved a message from my computer when I started up itunes that i would have to re-install the program if i want it to work properly. Being that I erased some important upper and lower filters from the registry. but i have yet to re-install it because I can still listen to music. will that help if i do?

Re: Driver Error 39 when using CD drive [Moved from XP]

ok i re-installed i tunes, then went into the device manager, and uninstalled the dvd/cd-r drive. when i searched for hardware changes, the same problem persists: my drive shows up on new hardware found with a yellow exclamation and the error 39 stamped to it.

also, i've downloaded a registry cleaner that is finding new things to clean daily out of my system.. would a virus be the source of my problems?

thanks dai -mike

Re: Driver Error 39 when using CD drive [Moved from XP]

the registry cleaner will cause more problems than it fixes used on a daily basis
scroll down to 39

Re: Driver Error 39 when using CD drive [Moved from XP]

registry cleaners cause problems more than fix them? .. alright, noted.
I've uninstalled the device from my system countless times, and re-installed it with the same driver message. (or searched for new hardware, because windows will automatically install it)

I have also downloaded the updated firmware from the dell website. When i run the firmware process, it cannot locate my qsi drive! "no qsi drive found, update f/w to ud-30" Whatever that means. My cousin said he would make me a bootable drive from a usb source, i might do that, but i still have to buy the usb source.. :( not fun.

Re: Driver Error 39 when using CD drive [Moved from XP]

if it cannot find the drive it is maybe the wrong firmware upgrade
there are numours posts about it on google with no fix
cdfreaks say it is company propriatory and no 3rd party firmware should be used on it
email dell and see what they suggest
