I connect my external hard-drive. No matter what computer. This sorta happened outa the blue. I had it connected to another computer and forgot it on for maybe 10 hours. It was properly ventilated. I shut it off, and connected it to my laptop and it said new hardware found. 24. Literally just a 24. I have done this on multiple computers and they all say the same. I thought it may be my computer at first but none of them read it. It was a 250 gig and probably had 15-20% space left.
Any ideas? Good ol computer problems. I just found out that i can't read cd/dvd's. I know they are there (ones with media on them) but appear blank. And...if they are blank i can see them there in My Computer but i can't burn anything to them. OK...just tried something. I can burn CD's with normal windows XP burner but its wierd...i burn it and it says it aint there if i put it in again. Gar...i deleted the upper/lower filters and to no avail. My CD/DVD drive is: D:\ PBDS DVD+-RW DS-8W1P and then microsoft (i found the HDD problem, but the resolution doesn't work) Last edited by dai; 11-18-2008 at 07:48 PM. |

Re: My external HD is "24"?
i have searched all over for the reference 24 but all that comes up is running 24/7
see if you can run the drive makers diognostic utility on the drive http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 check for a firmware update for the drive uninstall your burning software and reinstall

Re: My external HD is "24"?
Okay...the hard-drive. How do i run the diagnostics when the computer has no idea the HD is there.
And for the CD drive...i can't find any firmware updates. And my burning software. I have roxio 6, winamp 5.5, musicmatch, and my adobe programs. Do i have to uninstall all that. Dumb question but how would that help. Although without the drive roxio 6 is pointless.... |

i said to try it and see if it picks up the drive, the diognostic runs straight after the bios before anything else cuts in

Re: My external HD is "24"?
Yay...roxio 6 was giving me problems with the CD Rom. Thank god that works now.
But i don't understand the diagnostics test. I burned the iso to the disc. And installed the s0ftware. On reboot nothing happens. Boot from disc doesn't work either. Last edited by Blast; 11-19-2008 at 03:41 PM. |

Re: My external HD is "24"?
the diognostic is an iso[bootable]
you don't install it you boot the computer from it you set the computer to boot from cd first then put the disk in and boot up

Re: My external HD is "24"?
Alrighty....it worked but did not see the drive *Tear* i even tried it on another computer with JUST THE HARD DRIVE hooked to it. Put in the disc, and it ran. The whole thing was all garbled (the other one i was using was like...ancient. 1993-94 with an XP upgrade) but i remember how it worked and it did not change. My dad keeps saying it is a virus (if it is it caught it off of his computer, so he has no reason to get mad at me.) but either way he will bring it in to a computer shop. I told him i hear the HD spin and even feel it spin, but you don't here the reader pin/stick/whatever you want to call it move around. It just spins. I think that maybe leaving it on (with it uploading a file to youtube and leaving media player classic open with some VOB files it it overnight) was just to much. It isn't old, so it should not have died. But the thing is...when i use it, I USE IT. As in transferring my entire computer (except restricted files) onto it. It literally is a backup drive. I has my entire drive C, previous images with gimp/photoshop all the way to my music backups.
