CD/DVD Drive Will No Longer Read

I tried to search for this topic but there is some sort of error with your search or something.

This weekend I have been importing cds through iTunes onto my HP Pavillion dv6700 laptop with Vista SP1.

Today I decided I wanted to burn a couple playlists to a disk. This would be the first time I've used the burner on this laptop. It is a brand new computer.

I burned one playlist to a CD using iTunes.

Then I attempted to do the next one on iTunes and in the middle it stopped working. No errors or anything. Just stopped. So I thought it was done. I tried to load it onto the comptuer to listen to it but it didn't work.

So I inserted a different cd (one of the ones I imported already) and it wouldn't read it. Then I started checking a bunch of my CD's and now not a single CD can be read on the computer. Not through my Computer, iTunes or anything. When I insert the CD, the drive makes ALOT of spinning noise and clicking sounds like it's trying really hard to read it. But nothing happens on the computer.

I have uninstalled my drivers and reinstalled them. Didn't work. I have also tried a system restore, also didn't work. I also deleted my lowfilters and highfilters. That didn't work either (though I may not have done it right)

What do I do? This is so irritating and HP's Customer support is HORRIBLE. Thanks!

Re: CD/DVD Drive Will No Longer Read

Yes. I did that follow directions on another website. Although they told me to use the search to find those and delete them after i went to that folder. I might have deleted the wrong ones. But there is no lowerfilters or upperfilters where that asks me to go.

Re: CD/DVD Drive Will No Longer Read

I hope you did not delete the wrong ones.
Playing with the registry can easily corrupt it.

Can you give me the exact model of the laptop DV6700 what?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: CD/DVD Drive Will No Longer Read

What are the letters after dv6700. This would be on the tag on the bottom of the laptop (ex. DV6700US).
If I input DV6700 on the HP website I get over 300 choices.

Oh, stupid HP. It has nothing else on the bottom of the computer or anywhere else that doesn't say simply, HP Pavillion dv6700. Sorry. It does say "Service tag: 6809wm" though.

Yea, thats the number I was looking.
Can you go to the device manager and expand the + for your cd-rom.
Tell me what it says (ex. Lite-ON DVDRW LH20A1L)

Re: CD/DVD Drive Will No Longer Read

Thanks for the shot. I was going to try to find a firmware update. No luck
Did you have this issue prior to install ITunes?
Have you tried to uninstall Itunes and see if your drive starts working?

Well, I installed iTunes when I first got the computer, so no.

It just happened today for the first time when burning a cd in iTunes. I uninstalled it and nothing changed with the drive problem.

Re: CD/DVD Drive Will No Longer Read

Hi,
If you uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for your CD-ROM (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7560A)
from the device manager and Reboot (Vista will reinstall the driver).
If you have gone through this proceedure (CORRECTLY):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461

If these did not resolve it you could try:

A system restore to see if it resolves the issue.
Reinstall VISTA (you may have corrupted the registry some how). Backup ALL your Data.

If none of these steps have not resolved your issue. Then the CD-ROM itself maybe bad and needs to be replaced.

Bill
