[SOLVED] Strange DVD Drive problem
Hi guys,
I have just built a new PC. Everything went well, I installed Vista fine, Installed the MB driver disk fine and now everytime I try to install something the install process hangs. The disk reads fine and when I start the install it usually gets to about half way then the DVD drive just stops responding can't even open it. I have tried a new DVD drive and a new Sata cable to no avail. Any ideas? Cheers

Re: Strange DVD Drive problem
just an update, I did a complete reinstall of vista, installed video card, installed office, installed antivirus, then installed the MB drivers. After the MB drivers installed I got the problem again.
I went into safe mode and ran registry mechanic and it came back with 700 odd errors, there were no errors before I installed the MB drivers.

Re: Strange DVD Drive problem
steer clear of registry cleaners

Re: Strange DVD Drive problem
Ok next guess?? I replaced the PSU with my $300 800w one and still the same problem. HDD? or MB? I used the seagate scan utility and no errors on the HDD.

Re: Strange DVD Drive problem
I can't even get into safe mode anymore. It just seems to slowly get worse and worse with each restart until I have to reinstall. Then it works fine and the process starts again. BTW thanks for all the help.

Re: Strange DVD Drive problem
unplug the power lead to the dvd drive and see if it boots ok
if not try it with the power plug removed from the h/drive and check cmos reset turn the computer off remove the power lead from the back take the side off remove the cmos battery move the cmos jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pin 2 and 3 and the back to pins 1 and 2 reinsert the battery put the side on replug in the power lead boot the computer there can be 2 solder points you touch with a screwdriver 2 pins you touch with a screwdriver or use a jumper a cmos clear switch or button there will be a diagram and instructions in your manual

Re: Strange DVD Drive problem
Thanks for all the help, It turns out it was the HDD after all, I put it in a different system and got the same errors. Swapped the HDD and it works fine. Cheers. This can be marked as solved.
